Canon New F-1 is the electronic refinement of the F-1 — in production 1981-1992, replacing the original mechanical F-1. The New F-1 added shutter-priority AE (with the AE Finder FN) and aperture-priority AE (with the AE Power Winder FN), plus the AE Servo finder for full automation, while retaining mechanical operation at higher shutter speeds (1/2000 down to 1/90 mechanical; below that requires battery).

Key features

  • Canon FD bayonet
  • Hybrid electromechanical shutter — 8s to 1/2000 + B; mechanical at 1/90-1/2000, electronic below
  • Multiple AE modes via finder + winder combinations
  • Interchangeable viewfinders — Eye-Level, AE Finder FN, AE Servo, waist-level
  • Battery-dependent for slow speeds and AE

Practical notes

  • New F-1 bodies on used market: $400-800 working examples
  • The AE Finder FN is the most-used accessory for AE convenience
  • Built-to-last; many bodies still functional in 2026
