Pentax MX is the compact mechanical Pentax SLR — in production 1976-1985, conceptually paired with the ME (electronic AE) as Pentax's compact-SLR offering. The MX is significantly smaller and lighter than the K1000 with refined controls and an LED viewfinder display, while retaining mechanical shutter operation and battery-independence.

Key features

  • Pentax K bayonet
  • Mechanical horizontal cloth shutter — 1s to 1/1000 + B
  • LED viewfinder display (over/under indicators)
  • Manual exposure only
  • Battery-independent for shutter; battery for meter only
  • Compact body — 495g; smaller than K1000 (620g)

Practical notes

  • MX bodies on used market: $200-400 working examples
