Carl Zeiss Planar T 50mm f/1.4 C/Y* is the iconic Contax/Yashica fast normal lens — for 35mm SLR bodies including the Contax RTS, RTS II, RTS III, 139 Quartz, Aria, and Yashica FR / FX-3. The Planar 50/1.4 is among the most-recommended manual-focus 35mm normal lenses, prized for its rendering signature and Carl Zeiss optical quality.

Key features

  • Contax/Yashica bayonet mount
  • 7-element/6-group double-Gauss Planar formula with T* multi-coating
  • 55mm filter thread
  • Manual aperture + manual focus — fully mechanical
  • West German manufacture (early) or Japanese-made by Kyocera (later)
  • Distinctive rendering — sharp wide-open by 1980s standards, with the "Zeiss snap" combination of high microcontrast and smooth tonal transitions

Use case + rendering

The Planar 50/1.4 is the universal Contax C/Y normal lens — bought by virtually every C/Y system buyer as their first lens. Wide open at f/1.4 it is sharp enough for serious use (a notable advantage over many fast normals of its era which required stopping down to f/2 for usable sharpness). At f/2.8-f/5.6 it is exceptional across the field.

The "Zeiss look" — high microcontrast with gentle tonal transitions and clean color — is most clearly visible on this lens. Compares favorably to the Nikkor 50/1.4 AI-S, Canon FD 50/1.4, and Pentax SMC 50/1.4 of similar era; differences are often more about character than strict resolution.
